Childhood Absence Epilepsy
Family Study

Inclusion Criteria
Clinical features
- Frequent typical absence seizures (several to many per day)
- Age of onset between 3-9 years
- No prior history of epileptic seizures (except febrile convulsions)
- With or without generalized tonic clonic seizures
- No partial tonic/clonic seizures
- Normal child development
- Normal intelligence and normal neurological exam
- No signs of CNS inflammation, trauma or metabolic disease
EEG
- At least one EEG with bilateral and synchronous 3Hz spike and wave on normal background activity
- No interictal diffusely slow background activity
- No generalized spike and waves slower than 2.5 Hz
- No focal or multi focal spikes, especially activated during sleep or brief runs of generalized rapid spikes
Response to anti epileptic medication
- Immediate response to anti-epileptic medication
- Good seizure control under AE's
